The Mexican Plant on My German Windowsill

When my husband gave me a Mexican poinsettia for Christmas, I simply thought it was a beautiful seasonal plant.

I had no idea it would become one of my favorite stories.

Bringing Home a Mexican Poinsettia

My husband brought home this poinsettia to decorate our home for Christmas in 2024. I love plants, but I have to confess that I am far from being an expert. At first, I simply thought it was a beautiful Christmas plant. I knew almost nothing about how to care for it.

As I started reading about poinsettias, I discovered something that made me smile:

they are native to Mexico.

Suddenly, I realized that a little piece of my homeland was growing in our home in Germany.

As someone who has lived away from Mexico for many years, that discovery made this little plant feel even more special.

It is May, not December

My poinsettia kept growing throughout the year.

When Christmas arrived, I expected the leaves to turn red.

They did not.

The plant just kept growing. Then, in May, something unexpected happened. Some of the leaves slowly turned red, and tiny yellow flowers appeared in the center.

Once again, I was curious, so I did what I always do—I started researching.

That’s when I learned that my poinsettia had become a little… confused.

Its natural cycle had shifted, so it decided to bloom at a completely unexpected time.

Now that it has finished blooming, I will let it rest before helping it begin a new cycle. With a little care, I hope it will bloom again next December.

My husband recently told me that he had never seen a poinsettia grow this big. That made me smile.

Many people think poinsettias only last for Christmas, but with a little patience and care, they can continue growing for years.

Blooming in Its Own Time

I never expected my poinsettia to bloom in May.

Sometimes life does not follow the calendar we expect. My poinsettia certainly did not.

Looking at this plant reminds me that growth is not always visible at first.

Sometimes it arrives quietly.

Sometimes it surprises us.

And sometimes it blooms when nobody expects it.
